COVID-19 Updates

March is Fraud Prevention Month. The MTAM Insurance & Practice Management Committee has compiled several resources to help members recognize and protect themselves personally and professionally from scams and fraud.

This month in particular we'd like to highlight a variety of email phishing scams that commonly circulate. View examples.

If you have received an email like these, please delete the email and do not respond to it.

As with all phishing emails, members are encouraged to report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) has shared a recent update regarding fraud in Manitoba and announced several events to help raise awareness.

In 2020, Manitobans lost over $4.4 million through mass market scams. This includes $1.9 million lost through extortion scams. Extortion scams were the most reported scams and they were the most profitable for fraudsters not only in Manitoba, but in all of Canada.

To help raise awareness, WPS has prepared a video detailing what extortion scams are, the most common ones, and how Manitobans can protect themselves from falling victim to these scams.
