Just Get Over It - Presented by First Peoples House of Learning
November 1, 2022  |  1:00 PM - 3:30 PM
2.5 Core Competency Credits

“Just Get Over It” is a 2hr interactive truth telling immersion from Indigenous perspective into North America actualizing reconciliation.  This is a new training program through The First Peoples House of Learning (FPHL) at Trent University, funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada.

Members of the FPHL team, and Collaborators at Trent University, facilitate an interactive storytelling workshop from an Indigenous perspective and lens. The team consists of Indigenous activists, educators, knowledge holders and trained mental health support. This workshop is an interactive truth telling immersion exercise that seeks to educate, engage and enact accountability. Moving through a timeline that begins pre-contact we unveil events of colonization that address intergenerational trauma. Participants become part of the actualization of truth telling and are given solutions and ideas towards allyship and their own journey in reconciliation. Part of our truth telling involves the sharing of difficult lived experiences and we ask that an open mind and heart be brought to this experience.

Topics; Gender Discrimination within the Indian Act, 60’s scoop, Millennial Scoop, Residential Schools, Day Schools, Missing Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls, Two-Spirit experience and perspective.

More on FPHL projects can be found here

“Some members may ask what this has to do with massage. As we look at our ethics which states we must respect our client’s beliefs and experiences we note that Indigenous, Metis and Inuit peoples are our clients, and that client base will grow. It is also true that many Indigenous peoples do not appear Indigenous. What if conversation and comments are made in the treatment room that come from wrong assumptions about a person and their history. Also, we have a responsibility to demonstrate allyship if the conversation between non-Indigenous therapist and client turns towards current events that are harmful to Indigenous peoples and stereotypes” Susan Dupuis RMT, Member of Swan Lake First Nation.

Note: Cameras are required to be on for this presentation. If you do not have access to a camera, but would still like to participate, please contact the office at 204-927-7979. Due to the sensitive nature of the workshop it will not be recorded.
