Road to Regulation

A Historic Day for Massage Therapy in Manitoba

Today marks a historic milestone for massage therapy in Manitoba.

On June 16, 2026, the Government of Manitoba formally designated Massage Therapy as a regulated health profession under The Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), establishing the College of Massage Therapists of Manitoba and beginning a new chapter in the evolution of our profession.

For many massage therapists, this announcement represents the realization of a goal that has been pursued for decades.

Professional regulation is about more than legislation. It is a recognition of the education, professionalism, accountability, and commitment to public service demonstrated by massage therapists across Manitoba every day. It reflects the growth of the profession and its important role within Manitoba’s health-care system.

This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication of countless individuals who contributed their time, expertise, leadership, and advocacy over many years. MTAM would like to acknowledge the efforts of past and present Board members, volunteers, educators, association leaders, government partners, and massage therapists from across the province who helped move this work forward.

While today’s announcement is a moment for celebration, it is also the beginning of an important transition. Additional details regarding implementation timelines, registration requirements, governance, and next steps are expected in the coming months.

MTAM recognizes that members will have questions about what regulation means for their practice and professional future. We remain committed to supporting members throughout this transition and will continue to share information and resources as details become available.

For more than three decades, MTAM has worked to support, advocate for, and advance the massage therapy profession in Manitoba. That commitment remains unchanged. We look forward to working collaboratively with government, regulatory leaders, and the profession to help ensure a successful transition and a strong future for massage therapy in Manitoba.

Today, we celebrate a significant achievement and the many people who helped make it possible.

Congratulations to Manitoba’s massage therapy profession on this historic milestone.

The future of massage therapy in Manitoba begins a new chapter today.

Is Massage Therapy now regulated under the RHPA?

The profession has been designated as a regulated profession under the RHPA however the governance and structure of the regulatory college must still be created before RMTs can register with the new college.

Next steps

The Health Minister will select and announce the members of the new Transition Council (TC) for massage therapy.

The TC will be responsible for creating the structure for the new regulatory college as well as the eligibility registration requirements for existing massage therapists and new therapists entering the profession.

What now?

MTAM will continue to prepare our members for working in a regulated healthcare profession. Education sessions in the areas of professional boundaries, charting and draping best practices, business best practices, and recordings of past regulation updates are already available to members.

New regulation updates and related education sessions to help RMTs understand the RHPA are being planned. MTAM members will receive emails announcing these events as they are scheduled.
