MTAM Presentation to PC Caucus

On October 9, 2024, MTAM had the opportunity to meet with members of the PC Caucus on the subject of massage therapy regulation.

The invitation was extended by MLA Richard Perchotte, after learning about the many challenges the massage therapy profession faces while we wait for the current government to proceed with regulation.

MTAM Executive Director Tricia Weidenbacher, MTAM President and Vice President Offer Kuban and Stephanie Oteyza respectively, gave a presentation to MLAs which highlighted:

  • What massage therapy is and the various benefits of massage therapy when provided by an RMT.
  • Explained what an RMT is and our scope of practice.
  • The usage of massage therapy by Manitobans as compared to other forms of healthcare like physiotherapy and chiropractic.
  • The various safety concerns the public encounters while massage therapy remains unregulated.
  • The barriers some Manitobans face when accessing massage therapy care.
  • The challenges we've experienced with government along our quest for regulation.
  • Common complaints MTAM receives from members of the public (pertaining both to RMTs and those claiming to be RMTs),

The presentation was very well received. The MLAs present are very supportive and recognize the need for massage therapy regulation.  We look forward to hearing back from them in the coming weeks as to how they may be able to assist us in moving massage therapy regulation forward faster.
