The Road to Regulation: Massage Therapy in Manitoba

Massage therapy in Manitoba is on the path to becoming a regulated health profession under The Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
This is an important step forward for both the public and the profession. Regulation will ensure that only those who meet established education and practice standards are able to use the title “Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)” in Manitoba.

What Regulation Means for the Public
Regulation is designed to protect the public. Once the College of Massage Therapists is established, Manitobans can expect:
  • Higher standards of safety and quality in massage therapy services.
  • Clear accountability for all registered practitioners.
  • Public confidence in knowing that their massage therapist meets professional standards recognized by law.

Why Regulation Is Happening
Massage therapists play a vital role in Manitoba’s healthcare system, supporting wellness, recovery, and pain management. The Government of Manitoba has determined that regulation is necessary to recognize this role, protect patients, and bring massage therapy in line with other health professions such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and nursing.

Where We Are in the Process
  • The Minister of Health is in the process of appointing a Transitional Council.
  • This Council will begin the work of establishing a College of Massage Therapists, which will oversee standards of education, professional conduct, and registration of practitioners.
  • Updates will be shared with both the public and massage therapists as the process unfolds.

Our Commitment
The Massage Therapy Association of Manitoba (MTAM) is committed to keeping Manitobans informed as this process moves forward. We believe regulation will strengthen public protection, elevate professional standards, and further integrate massage therapy into the province’s healthcare system.
This is a historic milestone — one that ensures massage therapy in Manitoba continues to grow as a trusted, and respected healthcare profession.
